To snack or not to snack?!

Some years ago, the general advice in the nutrition world was to have 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I was a total snack monster at the time and it felt like I was always eating, or thinking about eating! I remember carrying oatcakes and nuts, for me and my son, EVERYWHERE!

Nowadays, I am off the yo-yo diet treadmill (hurray!!), so I tend to listen to my body more to see what suits me, rather than follow the latest trend or diet. It has taken me a long time to finally 'get' that there is no one size fits all, when it comes to eating and that we all have to work out what is best for each of us. I have had quite a bit of help with this and done a lot of work to get to my current imperfectly perfect state! I now know it suits me best to have 3 meals a day. Sometimes this is only 2 meals and sometimes 3 meals and a snack (particularly if I'm tired, busy, not eaten a decent lunch etc).

So, here are my top 5 favourite snacks of the moment:

1 - Slices of apple with almond butter - mmmm.

2 - A smoothie - preferably a chocolatey one!

3 - Home made protein balls (email me for the recipe!)

4 - a handful of almonds (soaked preferably, they are much nicer this way)

5 - if I'm more than a little hungry - poached egg on a slice of gluten free or rye toast

As you can see, I tend to lean more towards the sweet snacks, rather than savoury. Not bad for someone who grew up on a bag of M&S crisps every night! (Do you remember the pickled onion flavour?!)

Are you a little and often eater? If so, what are your favourite snacks?
