How to make your resolutions stick!

Oh no, it's that time of year again. Having stuffed ourselves over Christmas, we start thinking how things will be different in 2017. We may even be making those resolutions while still enjoying ourselves with one G&T or prosecco too many tonight - or even worse - in the morning!

But you're smarter than that and you are really ready to make some changed to your life. You have decided that you are going to be immensely organised and have joined the gym and are going to give up sugar and alcohol in January. Or maybe be vegan - Veganuary. Perhaps you've gone very 21st Century and opted for an Emot-usion - where you decide to foster more of the qualities you wish to have, (a la Stylist magazine here) be more brave, be kinder and start DOING more. Maybe you don't do resolutions, but are self aware enough to notice when things need to change?! Personally I tend to make my resolutions in the spring and autumn, as that works for me, but I get enough people contacting me in January wanting to get fit and slim down, to know that many people do the NY version!

Whatever it is that you are doing, don't let the fear of not doing it perfectly stop you from doing it. If you get 5 days into Dry January and then ditch it all at the first vodka, then read on for my 5 tips on how to stick with it:

  • Make your resolution in the cold light of day with intention (not when you're drunk or hungover)

  • Check you have the right motivation for doing it (ideally it should be for YOU)

  • Enlist the help of a friend or colleague to join you (especially if it's a fitness class or gym)

  • Avoid the hype and the quick fix promises.... (coz you know they don't work, don't you?!)

  • Acknowledge and appreciate the small 'wins' you have along the way (walked 30 mins every day for a week - that's awesome!)

Be the tortoise, not the hare and enjoy the journey!
