Sleepy, Dopey and Chubby?!

June 26, 2017

What the heck do I mean by that?  Well some of you may know the link between your waistline and the amount of sleep you get, but many of you won't.   It's not exactly new news, it's been around for the past 7 or 8 years, but I'm surprised at how few women know about it.  This post in Psychology Today from 2010, shows that increased sleep = decrease in appetite raising hormone ghrelin and a boost in your metabolic rate. Personally, when I am tired, I eat more the next day in a desperate bid to feel more energetic too.   Not exactly good business for the diet industry, is it?  Something that they can't package and sell, is actually one of the best ways to lose weight (and importantly, keep more muscle)!

For us women in our 40's and 50's going through changing hormones, it might be rather elusive to get a good night's sleep.  In fact it can be such a double edged sword, knowing you need more sleep (especially now you know it's linked to your fat-burning ability!) and then to struggle to get it.  Covers on, covers off, snoring partner, dawn chorus, ticking brain all play a role in preventing sleep.  Blooming frustrating, to say the least, particularly at this time of year when the tweeting birds wake you up about 5 minutes after you've nodded off....

There is hope though!  This is one of the major topics I teach women about in my programmes.  There are lots of tried and tested strategies to help improve your sleep quality and quantity and one very important one, which can be a game changer for many.  Ask me about the 10 Day Feel Good Programme, if you want to know more, but in the meantime, try the trick your Grandmother would have used - Lavender under your pillow - it will help promote feelings of relaxation.  ZZzzzzzz
